Benefits of the VI6_ Plasma Nitriding Furnace

  • Cold-wall design for excellent thermal control

  • Ideal for complex or sensitive parts requiring localized hardening

  • Fully automated operation for cycle consistency and reproducibility

  • Clean process, free from ammonia emissions

  • Good alternative to low-pressure nitriding (ALLNIT®) for certain industrial requirements

Applications

The VI6_ plasma nitriding furnace is especially suited for:

  • Tool steels and dies

  • Components with precision masking needs

  • Gears, shafts, and parts exposed to friction

  • Applications requiring enhanced surface hardness with minimal dimensional change

Plasma Nitriding Furnace

The VI6_ series by BMI is a range of advanced plasma nitriding furnaces specifically designed for high-performance vacuum plasma nitriding (also known as ionic nitriding). These cold-wall systems, equipped with a mobile dome, provide precise surface hardening for steels while ensuring protection of sensitive zones.

What is Vacuum Plasma Nitriding?

Vacuum plasma nitriding is a low-temperature, high-precision thermochemical treatment that forms a hard nitrided layer on steel components. Also known as ionic nitriding, this technique uses electrical energy to generate a nitrogen plasma within a vacuum chamber, ensuring:

  • Controlled nitrogen diffusion

  • Minimal distortion

  • Excellent wear and fatigue resistance

  • Masking capabilities for selective treatment

How the Plasma Nitriding Furnace Works

BMI’s ionic nitriding furnace operates using the following principle:

  • The component load is set at cathodic potential, while the vacuum chamber acts as the anode

  • A high-voltage differential creates an electrical field, producing a nitrogen plasma

  • Active nitrogen ions bombard the surface, initiating the plasma nitriding process

  • Metallic masks can be applied to prevent nitriding on selected areas
